Our History

Abingdon Veterinary Clinic is the oldest veterinary surgery in London. It is reported that Sir Frederick Thomas George Hobday lived in the area and reportedly worked in the practice after the 1st World War.

Sir Frederick Hobday, was one of very few early canine specialists and was an instrumental leader in advancing veterinary surgical procedures.

Hobday was a renowned and innovative vet, President of the Royal Veterinary College for a decade from 1927 and the official veterinary surgeon to Queen Alexandra from 1912 to 1939 as well as to others in the royal family. He invented the Hobday procedure in horses and there is still an annual lecture at Royal Veterinary College entitled the Frederick Hobday Memorial Address.

Frederick Hobday ran the practice in Kensington, next door to Henry Gray, a British anatomist and surgeon most notable for publishing the book Gray’s Anatomy.
